FLV: how Frame Witness recovers it

How Frame Witness carves FLV video along its tag chain, why a valid FLV prefix is not proof of the original end, and what was measured on a generated FLV file.

How it is found

FLV files start with the FLV signature and continue as a chain of tags, each followed by the size of the previous one. Frame Witness walks that chain. A run of valid tags is not proof that the original file ended there, so a carved FLV can be a prefix of the original, and the result keeps that uncertainty.

Fragmented files

Since 1.0.10 FLV pieces are followed along their tag chain.

Measured on generated videos

The generated FLV video on the formats test image came back with identical SHA-256 in Frame Witness. The image holds one short generated video per format, stored contiguously among zero-filled space and decoys, with no file system. It shows that the format is found and walked to its exact end; it does not show how often real cards keep these videos in one piece.

Contiguous generated videos on the formats test image; "identical" means the recovered file has the original SHA-256. See the test results page for the method.

What cannot come back

  • Overwritten data. Bytes that new files replaced are gone for every program.
  • Full and overwrite formats. A full format in Windows writes zeros over the volume; an overwrite format or a wipe does the same with other patterns.
  • SSD TRIM. A drive that receives TRIM usually erases freed blocks itself.
  • Encryption without the key. A BitLocker volume, or a phone with file-based encryption, cannot be read without its key.
